Unlike traditional camping or other forms of travel, RVing allows you to cook a full meal from scratch, anywhere you like. Make pasta by the lake or grill steaks in the middle of the woods. With an RV, the world is your kitchen!
RV kitchens generally have many similar features but will vary depending on the type of RV. From counter space to the number of stovetop burners, new RVers should take their time deciding what they want in an RV kitchen. To help with that process, part two of the Lazydays guide to choosing an RV for your family focuses on the kitchen. In this helpful guide, we’ll discuss the common kitchen features of each RV class, helpful accessories that are great for the everyday RV chef, and more!
What You’ll Find in an RV Kitchen
There’s nothing quite like cooking a meal in your RV. From relaxing after a long day of adventure to enjoying the company of family and friends, enjoying a meal cooked in your RV is what the RV lifestyle is all about.
To prepare newer RVers for cooking in an RV, we’ve broken down what to expect from kitchens in each type of RV.
Class A Motorhomes
As with other standard RV and motorhome features, Class A motorhomes tend to provide the most residential-style kitchens. Appliance-wise, you’ll find many of the same features in a Class A kitchen as you would in a stationary home. Multi-burner stoves, a residential refrigerator, a full sink, and a microwave are all common features of a Class A motorhome kitchen. Convection microwave ovens, dishwashers and other amenities can oftentimes be found as well.
The amount of counter space generally leaves plenty of room to cook a family-sized meal. However, you may want to bring along additional appliances, like a rice cooker or crockpot, to make cooking even easier, while still having enough space to prepare ingredients. Sinks typically offer plenty of room to wash dishes by hand. Overhead and cabinet storage will be ample, but it’s best to be as efficient as possible with what kinds of appliances and kitchenware you use.
Class B Motorhomes
Class B motorhomes are all about efficiency. As the smallest class of motorhome, their design philosophy is to make the most out of the space available. This extends to the kitchen area. If you love getting creative with your cooking, you will love cooking in a Class B motorhome. To make the most out of the space, you may find flip-up countertop extensions and removable sink covers. Some models include a microwave, two-burner stove or induction cooktop.
Storage space tends to be plentiful throughout the interior of the rig. The underneath bed area, overhead cabinets, mid-cab storage, and other unique storage hacks can be found in today’s Class B motorhomes. These rigs are great for RVers who love the outdoors. Their fantastic mobility allows them to go everywhere, meaning you can enjoy a great meal in your favorite national park, beach or anywhere else you like.
Class C Motorhomes
Combining the many interior features of a Class A with the mobility of a Class B, Class C motorhomes are a happy medium for many RVers. The kitchen reflects this design blend. A full-size sink, multi-burner stove (can range from two to four burners), large refrigerator, microwave oven, and even more storage are all common features. Ovens are found in some models and can be included in tandem with a microwave. Depending on your rig, you may be able to add another appliance to help with cooking larger meals. An outdoor grill and separate table are a great way to increase your cooking space and both accessories allow you to cook meals for large groups.
Fifth Wheels, Travel Trailers and Toy Haulers
Fifth Wheels, Travel Trailers, and Toy Haulers have the ability to devote their entire space to living and storage. With this shift in design comes a wide variation of RV kitchens available to RVers. Fifth Wheels have the most available living space and some even feature kitchens with an island. Fifth Wheels will often feature residential-size sinks, refrigerators, stoves, microwaves, and ovens. In general, dishwashers can also be included as an additional option. The extra prep and storage space can give aspiring chefs the extra space they need to cook for groups both large and small, or even set up buffet-style service if they prefer.
With Travel Trailers and Toy Haulers, kitchen size and its features vary depending upon the size of the RV. Rigs can range in size from 20 to 40 feet with kitchens to match. Smaller RVs tend to feature kitchens similar to those in Class B motorhomes and include a more compact refrigerator, stove, and sink. On the other hand, larger Travel Trailers and Toy Haulers may include additional features like walk-in pantries, outdoor grills, and much more.
Pop-Up Campers
These smaller towable RVs, perfect for families or couples that love the outdoors, offer a similar kitchen as Class B motorhomes. A stove (typically two burners), sink, and refrigerator are standard features. Some models may also feature a second, outdoor range. Seeing as they’re ideal for 2-4 people, Pop-Up campers allow for appropriately sized meals to be in a cooker. With a little creativity, RVers can also store a small outdoor grill to add another element of fun to their cooking.
